 The number of home security products available can make choosing a home security system a bit confusing. You can find hard wired or wireless home security products. They can be optional or required, simple or complex. It can take you a while to wade through the information available on home security products. Choosing only the most basic products can greatly simplify the process. The basic components of a home security system are the control panel, keypad, sensors, and an alarm.

 The control panel is the heart of the home security system. All of the sensors, the keypad, and all of the other components are wired into the control panel. The control panel ties the entire security system together. Without it, the security system would not function.

The keypad is another essential component of a security system. This is where you interact with the system. The keypad is where you activate or deactivate the alarm. The keypad may also display messages for the homeowners, letting them know if there has been a breach of security, or if one of the components is malfunctioning. The keypad also displays the current status of the security system.

 Access control sensors are also critical to the function of a home security system. Access control sensors detect of a door or window is opened while the system is active. When a sensor is triggered, the security system will sound an alarm, either immediately or on a delay. Most systems incorporate a delay, so that the homeowner will have time to deactivate the system when they walk through the door. Other sensors that you may find are motion sensors, which detect any movement in the room while the system is activated.

An alarm is the final component that is necessary in a home security system. Many of them sound an alarm to alert homeowners and neighbors of an intrusion. In many cases, the alarm is enough to cause a burglar to leave. Some alarms also notify the security company if there is an intruder detected. This is useful if the homeowners are out of the house, running errands or on vacation.

Not all home security products are necessary. Many home security products such as security cameras are optional while home security products such as the control panel, keypad, access control sensors and audible or visual alarms are necessary for the system to function properly.
